The first-ever survey done on the Moroccan rugs by the famous collector Gebhart Blazek in the 1920s, stated that there is nary a particular mention of the single knotted Azilal rugs other than the only one comprehensive Book of Moroccan rugs. He also argued that the book did not do justice in conveying the information about these single knotted Moroccan rugs.

It was a time in the early 1990s when the world first figured out about the greatAzilal rugs when high Atlas Mountains of North East Marrakesh were called among the difficult to reach mountains. A Myriad of tribes are situated behind the High Atlas Mountains where such notably are the Ait Bouzid, The Aitbou, the Ait Bougmez, the Aitbou Oulli, and the Ait Shokmane.

The Azilal rugs have been woven from these tribes living under the High Atlas Mountains of North East Marrakesh containing the details of the events from the women of the tribe went through. Azilal carpets are originated by telling the story of the region where the Azilal rugs and carpets are made. A topic like motherhood, rural life, patterns, childbirth, and every main event is weaved by appropriate tribal signs and patterns to express the events from their daily lives.

Woven by the women of the region. Azilal rugs are created from raw wool with single and doubled knotted patterns that correlate the culture and rituals that Berber mothers have been passing through their daughters from generations with vertical looms of tribal signs making the carpets unique of their kind.

Azilal rugs have always been created to enhance the elegance of the rooms, but there’s a thought that it is a red and a white rug origin that keeps the base of the Azilal rugs creamy white and red respectively. The red rug origin relates from AitBouzid and AitSokhmane and white rugs are from AitbouOulli and AitBouguemez valley. The white and creamy based rugs are what the real prototype Azilal rugs we all know.

It’s interesting, yet sad to know that during many French territories, they suppress the culture of rug weaving, also there were some years in not a single Azilal rug was produced. After 1934,the rug production years began to root again, where the Azilal rugs were created with single knots instead of weaving as they were produced before this time.

Since then, Azilal rugs creators (tribal women) are dedicated to hand weave and to demonstrate the tribal values of their homeland. It takes several months to prepare an Azilal rug a pride creation for your floor covering. According to a Moroccon Adverb ‘Exert effort, you shall be rewarded.

Hand-knotted Azilal rugs range in many artistic designs to create dense patterns utilizing bold saturated colors on the lighter white or creamy base, and if the base is in a darker shade like red, then light but bright colors are used to make graphic patterns.

To give your interior a more vibrant appearance, pair it with the bold Azilal rug and feel the difference.
